GOAL
For this project, I wanted to redesign the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s as a book that someone would actually want to display or collect. I imagined the audience as readers who enjoy classic literature, as well as people who know and love the story from the movie.
DESIGN
I wanted the cover to feel elegant without relying too heavily on the movie or Audrey Hepburn. I centered the design around Tiffany blue and used subtle story elements to hint at the book without giving everything away. I also added a silver outline and textured canvas effect to give it a little more of a vintage, collectible feel.
CHALLENGES
Book VS Film
One of the biggest challenges I faced during this project was creating a book cover without relying on the recognizable image of Holly Golightly or Audrey Hepburn from the film adaptation.
While Audrey Hepburn’s portrayal is iconic, I wanted the design to reflect the tone of the original novel rather than the movie. The book has a more subtle and introspective feel, so instead of focusing on the character herself, I chose to represent the setting and atmosphere through illustrations of New York apartment buildings, color, and typography. This approach allowed me to create a cover that captures the story’s mood while offering a fresh interpretation of the classic novel.
Redesigning a classic book
Another challenge I faced was redesigning the cover of such a well-known classic novel. The original cover i features an orange background with a serif title, and it’s minimal design has become iconic over the years.
I wanted to create something that felt fresh while still respecting the original’s understated elegance. At the same time, I didn’t want the design to lean too heavily on the film adaptation, which is often more recognizable than the novel itself. Finding the right balance between honoring the book’s history and creating a modern interpretation was one of the biggest design challenges throughout the project.
